Lekwa, made up of the former areas of Standerton, Morgenzon and Thutukani, is situated in the Eastern Highveld of the Province of Mpumalanga. Lekwa covers an area of approximately 150 square kilometers.

The name LEKWA (Ligwa) means "the Vaal River". The town of Standerton, which is the official seat of the Municipality, is situated on the banks of the Vaal River, hence the name Legwa.

Standerton was proclaimed a town on the 1st January 1879, and was named after Adrian Hendrik Stander, owner of the farm on which the town was established. The town has a rich and diverse history.

Many nations have shaped the history of the town since its inception more than one hundred years ago. The British, Italians, Spanish, Zulu's, Sotho's and many more enjoy a place in the history of the town. Lekwa was the scene of many battles during the boer war and till today still bears the scars of those long ago battles. Many memorials have been erected in the town to mark its rich and diverse history.
